Music genres are determined by numerous factors, and their popularity can shift rapidly based on different circumstances. Rock music once reigned supreme, yet now gives way to R&B and Hip Hop as more contemporary styles.

Blues music has long been associated with American culture and society. It has served as an influence to genres as diverse as jazz, R&B, rock, country and even modern day pop music.

Nirvana’s Nevermind, Pearl Jam’s Ten and Soundgarden’s Badmotorfinger all helped spread grunge worldwide due to their immense commercial success and helped establish grunge as a legitimate musical genre. Yet some bands renounced commercial success due to fears it would detract from its true spirit and core beliefs.


Ambient music stands apart from most genres through its use of unique soundscapes. Ambient music’s goal is to present texture, tone and mood using electronic synthesizers; this genre was first pioneered by French classical composer Erik Satie’s “furniture music”, first performed publicly by avant-garde composer John Cage in 1917 but unplayed for years until John Cage revised them years later in the twentieth century.

Popularity of music genres can fluctuate over time, depending on current trends and historical events. But some genres never fade from public attention, like rock. With its emotive expressions of struggle and triumph, rock remains universally beloved genre. Additionally, rhythm and blues stands out with its emphasis on lyrics and storytelling – it even gave rise to many subgenres like gangsta rap, trap music and mumble rap!


EDM (Electronic Dance Music) is often associated with dubstep and progressive house, yet EDM stands on its own as an genre in its own right. EDM features rhythmically repeating melodies designed to induce trance-like states in listeners while its fast tempos put listeners in an altered state. Furthermore, this genre includes multiple layers of sounds such as vocals and percussion as well as subgenres like Trance music which all combine into an overall form of EDM music.

R&B music combines gospel, jazz and blues influences into one popular genre for women. Usher, Rihanna and Mariah Carey are among those most prominent examples of this style of music.

Pop music derived its influence from rock, but has developed its own distinct style over time. This genre features amplified instruments with emotive lyrics. Pop has become widely popular, leading to many subgenres such as teen pop and power pop.

Punk rock music embodies the spirit of rebellion and social commentary with its aggressive, angry lyrics. This genre has even given birth to subgenres such as emo and post-punk; also renowned for its DIY spirit which encourages new artists to craft their own unique sounds – making it an excellent choice for brands looking to communicate an alternative or counterculture message.
